SMMPA ranks 5th in American Wind Energy Association report

SMMPA ranked 5th among municipal utilities nationwide with 109 MW of wind capacity in place to serve its customers according to the 2008 American Wind Energy Annual report.

The report cited a surge of growth in the wind industry throughout the United States. 2008 saw 8,500 MW of wind energy brought online, increasing the United States’ cumulative total to over 23,500 MW of installed wind energy capacity – tops in the world.

Among the 50 states, Minnesota ranked 4th in wind power generating capacity with 1,754 MW behind Texas, Iowa and California. Additionally, Minnesota now gets 7.48% of its total electricity from wind.
